Infantino backs Korean bid for women's World Cup
LONDON • Gianni Infantino, the president of world football governing body Fifa, has raised the prospect of North and South Korea co-hosting the next women's World Cup in 2023.
The move would be a huge statement in terms of cooperation between two nations that have been deeply divided for the past 70 years. There have also been discussions about a possible joint Olympic bid for the 2032 Games.
Speaking at the International FA Board meeting in Aberdeen, Scotland, Infantino said: "I have been hearing for the women's World Cup in 2023, the two Koreas. I have been hearing it would be great. It would show the power of football. They have been in a very, very difficult situation."
He revealed that a bid by an Asian country for the men's 2030 World Cup could not be completely ruled out even though Qatar, which is part of the Asian confederation, is hosting in 2022.
Traditionally, Fifa's rotation rules have meant a 12-year gap before a confederation can host a World Cup again. There have been suggestions that China could bid for 2030, although it is more likely to wait until 2034.
A joint British and Ireland bid for 2030 is being considered, while a South American bid involving Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and Chile has been launched.
"Generally, the more bidders we have, the better it is," the Swiss-Italian said. "I am so happy that we made a bidding process for the 2026 World Cup which was the first one in the history of the World Cup which has not been overshadowed by any scandal.
"We did it in a transparent and professional way, and we will take four years before we decide the 2030 World Cup, so we will have time to discuss all these topics."

LONDON (REUTERS) - Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi is set to start one of the London club's next two Premier League matches, against Brighton and Hove Albion and West Ham United, manager Maurizio Sarri said on Tuesday (April 2).
Hudson-Odoi received his first England start in last month's international break, but he has yet to start a league game under Sarri, making six appearances as a substitute.
Calls for the Italian boss to name the 18-year-old in the starting lineup have grown louder, with fans chanting his name even though he was an unused substitute during Sunday's laboured 2-1 win at Cardiff City.
"He is ready to play, probably he will start tomorrow or in the next match," Sarri told reporters ahead of Brighton's visit on Wednesday.
"In pre-season after four or five training sessions, I realised that Callum was a player with very great potential.
"In my opinion, in that moment he wasn't ready to play at this level, but during the season he has improved and he is ready.
"I want him to improve more because the potential is high. Callum is always in my mind... He is our future."
Chelsea have slipped down the table despite a strong start to the season, when they went unbeaten in 18 games, and fans have been typically vocal in their displeasure at Sarri and his methods.
"I don't know, probably we started very well and so our fans thought that everything was really very easy for us, but it isn't true," Sarri added.
Chelsea are currently sixth in the standings, a point behind fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur and fifth-placed Manchester United in the battle for Champions League spots.
"We have to work to improve, I think that if you take a coach with my characteristics, you have to work.
"I'm not happy, of course... I can understand well the frustration of our fans."

BERLIN (AFP) - A late goal from Franck Ribery fired Bayern Munich to a nervy 1-0 win over RB Leipzig on Wednesday (Dec 19), which saw the Bundesliga football champions move to within six points of league leaders Borussia Dortmund.
For long periods, it looked as if Bayern would squander the opportunity given to them by Dortmund's shock 2-1 defeat by newly promoted Fortuna Dusseldorf on Tuesday.
Both sides came within inches of taking the lead in the first half. Bayern's Robert Lewandowski was denied by a fine save from Peter Gulacsi at one end, while Dayot Upamecano thundered a header against the crossbar at the other.
Bayern's Niklas Sule and Joshua Kimmich both missed chances from close range in the second half. Two red cards for Bayern's Renato Sanches and Leipzig's Stefan Ilsanker crowned a scrappy game late on, but not before Ribery had finally swept in an 83rd-minute winner to breathe new life into the title race.
"Ribery took the goal brilliantly," Bayern's Thomas Muller told Sky. "He just popped up exactly when and where we needed him. Thanks, Franck!"
Bayern, with 33 points from 16 games, remain in third on goal difference behind Borussia Monchengladbach, but are now five points ahead of fourth-placed Leipzig.
Eintracht Frankfurt, meanwhile, remain hot on Leipzig's tail despite being held to a 2-2 draw at local rivals Mainz. Robin Quaison fired Mainz ahead on 10 minutes before Luka Jovic pulled Frankfurt level on the half-hour mark.
Quaison restored the lead just five minutes later, turning in a dipping cross from Jean-Paul Boetius. Not to be outdone, Jovic headed in a second equaliser moments before half-time.
Earlier on Wednesday, Schalke were plunged further into crisis as they lost 2-1 to Bayer Leverkusen in a cagey clash between the Bundesliga's two under-performing teams.
Defeat leaves Schalke just a point above the relegation play-off place, having won just one of their last six league games.
Leverkusen opened the scoring on 26 minutes when Leon Bailey struck a curling shot against the post and Aleksandar Dragovic prodded in the rebound.
Alario doubled the lead less than 10 minutes later, swivelling on the edge of the box to send a low volley underneath Ralf Faehrmann.
Having looked helpless for much of the first half, Schalke were given a glimmer of hope on the stroke of half-time when Haji Wright bundled the ball in at a corner to pull a goal back.
Yet the hosts wasted several chances to draw level in the second half. Steven Skrzybski missed the target from close range, while Yevhen Konoplyanka skewed wide.
Elsewhere, Werder Bremen held Hoffenheim to a 1-1 draw, while a bottom-of-the-table clash between Freiburg and Hannover also ended one goal apiece.
Bremen had several chances early on, including a remarkable miss at point blank range from Yuya Osako. The Japanese came to regret his poor finishing when Leonardo Bittencourt put Hoffenheim ahead at the other end.
The home side, who had been accused of using a drone to spy on Hoffenheim in the build-up to the game, equalised through Theodor Gebre Selassie shortly the break.
Freiburg took the lead with just two minutes played, Luca Waldschmidt converting a penalty after a clear handball from Hanover captain Waldemar Anton.
Ten minutes later, Felipe hooked the ball in from a corner to draw Hanover level and lift them off the bottom of the table, now occupied by Nuremberg after losing 2-0 to Monchengladbach.

BERLIN (AFP) - A late goal from Franck Ribery fired Bayern Munich to a nervy 1-0 win over RB Leipzig on Wednesday (Dec 19), which saw the Bundesliga football champions move to within six points of league leaders Borussia Dortmund.
For long periods, it looked as if Bayern would squander the opportunity given to them by Dortmund's shock 2-1 defeat by newly promoted Fortuna Dusseldorf on Tuesday.
Both sides came within inches of taking the lead in the first half. Bayern's Robert Lewandowski was denied by a fine save from Peter Gulacsi at one end, while Dayot Upamecano thundered a header against the crossbar at the other.
Bayern's Niklas Sule and Joshua Kimmich both missed chances from close range in the second half. Two red cards for Bayern's Renato Sanches and Leipzig's Stefan Ilsanker crowned a scrappy game late on, but not before Ribery had finally swept in an 83rd-minute winner to breathe new life into the title race.
"Ribery took the goal brilliantly," Bayern's Thomas Muller told Sky. "He just popped up exactly when and where we needed him. Thanks, Franck!"
Bayern, with 33 points from 16 games, remain in third on goal difference behind Borussia Monchengladbach, but are now five points ahead of fourth-placed Leipzig.
Eintracht Frankfurt, meanwhile, remain hot on Leipzig's tail despite being held to a 2-2 draw at local rivals Mainz. Robin Quaison fired Mainz ahead on 10 minutes before Luka Jovic pulled Frankfurt level on the half-hour mark.
Quaison restored the lead just five minutes later, turning in a dipping cross from Jean-Paul Boetius. Not to be outdone, Jovic headed in a second equaliser moments before half-time.
Schalke slip deeper into trouble
Earlier on Wednesday, Schalke were plunged further into crisis as they lost 2-1 to Bayer Leverkusen in a cagey clash between the Bundesliga's two under-performing teams.
Defeat leaves Schalke just a point above the relegation play-off place, having won just one of their last six league games.
Leverkusen opened the scoring on 26 minutes when Leon Bailey struck a curling shot against the post and Aleksandar Dragovic prodded in the rebound.
Alario doubled the lead less than 10 minutes later, swivelling on the edge of the box to send a low volley underneath Ralf Faehrmann.

Elsewhere, Werder Bremen held Hoffenheim to a 1-1 draw, while a bottom-of-the-table clash between Freiburg and Hannover also ended one goal apiece.
Bremen had several chances early on, including a remarkable miss at point blank range from Yuya Osako. The Japanese came to regret his poor finishing when Leonardo Bittencourt put Hoffenheim ahead at the other end.
The home side, who had been accused of using a drone to spy on Hoffenheim in the build-up to the game, equalised through Theodor Gebre Selassie shortly the break.
Freiburg took the lead with just two minutes played, Luca Waldschmidt converting a penalty after a clear handball from Hanover captain Waldemar Anton.
Ten minutes later, Felipe hooked the ball in from a corner to draw Hanover level and lift them off the bottom of the table, now occupied by Nuremberg after losing 2-0 to Monchengladbach.

SINGAPORE - Having been given the honour to coach the national football team, Nazri Nasir could not have asked for a more difficult opponent for his debut, one that could turn his dream job into a nightmare.
Facing arch-rivals Malaysia on Wednesday (March 20) in the AirMarine Cup at the Bukit Jalil Stadium, the former national captain is embracing the stress and strain of the fixture though.
"The pressure is like a pleasure," he told The Straits Times on Tuesday from Kuala Lumpur, sounding cheerful. "I am taking this game positively. I see it as a challenge and hope this can rub off on the players."
On March 7, the Football Association of Singapore announced Nazri as the caretaker coach, leading the Lions for this week's AirMarine Cup quadrangular, the team's first outing since Asean Football Federation Suzuki Cup in November 2018.
Singapore will meet Malaysia on Wednesday while Oman play Afghanistan on the same day.
The winners will contest the final on Saturday while the losers will play in the third-place play-off.
Since then, the 48-year-old coach managed to train the squad only twice. The first, a 90-minute session on Monday, focused on small-sided games and finishing.
The second, a one-hour session, was conducted on Tuesday evening to home in on tactics.
Apart from goalkeeper Zaiful Nizam, who is nursing a calf strain, the rest of the 22-strong squad have no injury problems.
The Lions are currently ranked 165th in the world by global football governing body Fifa while Malaysia are two rungs below.
But at the Suzuki Cup in 2018, it was the Tigers who performed better, reaching the final before losing 3-2 to Vietnam while the Lions crashed out at the group stage.
Tigers coach Tan Cheng Hoe told Malaysian media: "Their (the Malaysian players') spirits are high - that's good, but I want to make sure they adapt to the way we play.
"It is different from their clubs. Training sessions have been different for them, but they've adjusted.
"Playing against Singapore is not going to be easy. I've told the boys not to be emotional but just concentrate on the game."
And even though Malaysia have the home advantage and better recent form, Nazri can sense the determination coursing through the Singapore team ahead of the Causeway derby.
He said: "Even from one training session, I can see all players are eager to go. Guys like (Khairul) Amri, (Khairul) Nizam, Yasir (Hanapi), Gabriel (Quak) and Faris (Ramli) all looked very sharp. All players are hungry to be in the first XI.
"We are not going to sit and wait for Malaysia to attack us. We will pressure them from the start. Chances are very few at international games but when they appear, I want the players to be focused and take these chances.
"We are not expecting a draw. Malaysia will be a very tough opponent, this is a very big rivalry and both sides want to win. But I trust my players to deliver."

SINGAPORE - New Football Association of Singapore (FAS) technical director Joseph Palatsides hopes to rouse local football from its slumber.
"I see Singapore football as a sleeping giant," said the 53-year-old Australian, who signed a two-year contract with the option of a further two years, at his unveiling at Jalan Besar Stadium on Thursday (May 2).
"The culture of Singapore is of excellence... and this culture can be translated to football as well. We already have things in place to achieve excellence and I see it as my job to take it one step further."
Prior to coming to Singapore, the former defender was the head of A-League club Melbourne City's youth academy.
Palatsides, who played and coached in Australia and Greece, will oversee the development of Singapore football in all aspects, which includes enhancing the development of the national age-group teams, grassroots and women's football, as well as further strengthening the youth development and coaching structures.
Singapore won three South-east Asian titles in five AFF Suzuki Cups from 2004 to 2012 but have since suffered three straight first-round exits. The Lions are currently ranked 160th in the world, with local fans lamenting a lack of talented young players coming through the development system.
Palatsides fills the role vacated by Michel Sablon, who was appointed in April 2015 and left last December. The Belgian had unveiled an 11-point plan to rejuvenate the game in May 2016. FAS president Lim Kia Tong said Palatsides stood out because of his experience as a player, player-coach, coach and then academy head.

Said Lim: "Through our conversations with him, we believe that he is aligned in terms of the direction that we want to head towards for Singapore football and is the best person to further strengthen our football development structure."
Palatsides said he had a meeting with the coaches of the national youth teams, which he described as very productive. He told them he did not want to make "wholesale changes" and he told The Straits Times that he had no plans to bring in his own staff.
"I want to impart everything that I know to the local coaches, as the first port of call," he said.
"If there's something missing, that's something for myself and the general secretary to talk about.
"When I finish my tenure, I want to see that I've left the local coaches in a better state... That's part of the legacy I want to leave - that the local coaches are in a state of power throughout the whole system."
The FAS is also due to announce the new national coach before the next Fifa window next month.
Lim told STÂ on the sidelines of Thursday's press conference that it had completed contract negotiations with the incoming individual.
The position has been vacant since V. Sundram Moorthy stepped down in April last year, with Fandi Ahmad and Nazri Nasir filling in for the Suzuki Cup and the AirMarine Cup respectively.

SINGAPORE - New Football Association of Singapore (FAS) technical director Joseph Palatsides hopes to rouse local football from its slumber.
"I see Singapore football as a sleeping giant," said the 53-year-old Australian, who signed a two-year contract with the option of a further two years, at his unveiling at Jalan Besar Stadium on Thursday (May 2).
"The culture of Singapore is of excellence... and this culture can be translated to football as well. We already have things in place to achieve excellence and I see it as my job to take it one step further."
Prior to coming to Singapore, the former defender was the head of A-League club Melbourne City's youth academy.
Palatsides, who played and coached in Australia and Greece, will oversee the development of Singapore football in all aspects, which includes enhancing the development of the national age-group teams, grassroots and women's football, as well as further strengthening the youth development and coaching structures.
Singapore won three South-east Asian titles in five AFF Suzuki Cups from 2004 to 2012 but have since suffered three straight first-round exits. The Lions are currently ranked 160th in the world, with local fans lamenting a lack of talented young players coming through the development system.
Palatsides fills the role vacated by Michel Sablon, who was appointed in April 2015 and left last December. The Belgian had unveiled an 11-point plan to rejuvenate the game in May 2016. FAS president Lim Kia Tong said Palatsides stood out because of his experience as a player, player-coach, coach and then academy head.

Said Lim: "Through our conversations with him, we believe that he is aligned in terms of the direction that we want to head towards for Singapore football and is the best person to further strengthen our football development structure."
Palatsides said he had a meeting with the coaches of the national youth teams, which he described as very productive. He told them he did not want to make "wholesale changes" and he told The Straits Times that he had no plans to bring in his own staff.
"I want to impart everything that I know to the local coaches, as the first port of call," he said.
"If there's something missing, that's something for myself and the general secretary to talk about.
"When I finish my tenure, I want to see that I've left the local coaches in a better state... That's part of the legacy I want to leave - that the local coaches are in a state of power throughout the whole system."
The FAS is also due to announce the new national coach before the next Fifa window next month.
Lim told STÂ on the sidelines of Thursday's press conference that it had completed contract negotiations with the incoming individual.
The position has been vacant since V. Sundram Moorthy stepped down in April last year, with Fandi Ahmad and Nazri Nasir filling in for the Suzuki Cup and the AirMarine Cup respectively.

LONDON • Southampton have promised to ban supporters who mocked the death of Emiliano Sala by making aeroplane gestures during their 2-1 Premier League home loss to Cardiff on Saturday.
The game was Cardiff's first since the Argentinian striker's body was identified by an English coroner on Thursday, a day after it was recovered from underwater wreckage in the English Channel.
After the game at the St Mary's Stadium, a video on social media appeared to show two men in the home section making aeroplane gestures in the direction of the away fans.
Southampton confirmed both fans had been spoken to by police and intended to take "an extremely firm stance" over the incident.
The club added in a statement: "Such behaviour has no place in our game and will not be tolerated at St Mary's. The club will be taking an extremely firm stance against anyone involved and intends to ban those supporters identified."
Cardiff had been given permission to wear shirts embroidered with a yellow daffodil, the national emblem of Wales and the team colour of Nantes. And a minute's silence in memory of Sala was impeccably observed before an emotional match for the Welsh club.
The plane carrying Sala from the French city of Nantes to Cardiff, his new club, disappeared near the British island of Guernsey on Jan 21.
Captain Sol Bamba dedicated his goal and the victory to Sala.
He said: "A lot of things were going through my mind.
"I knew Emiliano. I know he was looking up there. The victory and the goal is for him."
The Ivorian defender scored the 69th-minute opener only for the hosts to equalise in stoppage time. But Kenneth Zohore netted a 93rd-minute winner that took Cardiff out of the relegation zone.
"It has been a tough couple of weeks," Bamba told Sky Sports. "We knew we had to give our all today. It wasn't easy but a performance like this was very pleasing."
Cardiff boss Neil Warnock was proud of his side's resilience as he paid his own post-match tribute.
He said: "Emiliano was a fabulous lad, and it's appropriate we came down with our black armbands on and put in a performance like that.
"We could easily have folded, but we were determined.
"We're limited, but you can't question their character and what they've got under their shirts because they've bags of heart."
Pilot David Ibbotson is still missing and the family's crowdfunding effort was boosted by the €27,000 (S$41,500) from French World Cup winner Kylian Mbappe, who pledged the same amount to the Sala search.
