Football: Fandi brothers Irfan and Ikhsan score again for BG Pathum and Raufoss respectively
SINGAPORE - The Fandi brothers are proving their fine vein of form is no fluke as both scored midweek for their respective clubs again.
In Raufoss, Norway, Ikhsan Fandi scored his second league goal for Raufoss IL in a 5-2 home defeat by Sandnes Ulf on Thursday (May 16) night.
After coming on as a 55th-minute replacement for Anton Henningsson, Ikhsan scored via a towering header off Mikkel Maigaard's corner in the 89th minute to reduce the arrears to 4-2, but this time there was to be no late comeback.
Just four nights ago on Sunday, Ikhsan had grabbed his first competitive goal for the second-tier Norwegian club in dramatic fashion when he scored a late bicycle-kick winner - coincidentally also in the 89th minute - in the 3-2 away victory at Skeid.
The 20-year-old striker has played in seven league games this season, all as a substitute, and his two goals have come from just 127 minutes of league action.
Despite the defeat, Raufoss are sixth in the 16-team league, and are still within the third-to-sixth playoff places, with the top two guaranteed automatic promotion to the top division.
Ikhsan told The Straits Times: "Yes I'm happy to score again, but we are disappointed not to get any points from this game.
Â
Â
"Scoring in back-to-back games shows I can do well at this level, and I'm just going to keep working hard and try to score as many goals as I can. If I can get more than 10 this season, it will be a very good tally."
Meanwhile in Thailand, Ikhsan's older brother Irfan Fandi grabbed his fourth goal in 13 games across all competitions in BG Pathum United's 3-0 win over Chiangmai in the second round of the League Cup on Wednesday.
The 21-year-old defender scored in the 75th minute and helped his second-tier Thai team to a clean sheet - his seventh of the season - in the victory over their top-division opponents as they progressed to the last 16.
Irfan had also scored in the 4-1 extra time win over Army United in the previous round in April.
With 31 points from 12 games, BG Pathum are top of Thai League 2 and on course for a swift return to the top tier.

"I'm very happy for Irfan and Ikhsan, this shows they are at a good level. Hopefully, they can spur the other boys to work harder as well." Given striker Ikhsan, 20, had arrived from Norway on Tuesday and was jet-lagged, it was no surprise that Fandi opted to bench his younger son.

Football: Willian gem sinks Newcastle as Chelsea cement fourth place
LONDON (AFP) - Maurizio Sarri warned his Chelsea stars to improve their mentality after Willian's sublime strike sealed a hard-fought 2-1 win over struggling Newcastle on Saturday (Jan 12).
Sarri's side took the lead through Pedro's early goal, but Ciaran Clark snatched a shock equaliser before half-time.
With Chelsea fans beginning to lose patience at their team's latest spluttering home display, Willian lifted the mood in the nick of time with his superb second-half curler.
Fourth-placed Chelsea have won five of their last seven league matches and sit six points clear of fifth-placed Arsenal, who lost at West Ham earlier on Saturday.
But, while Chelsea remain in control of the race to qualify for the Champions League, this was a far from convincing performance.
Labouring to beat third-bottom Newcastle showed how far Chelsea have to go to bridge the gap in class to leaders Liverpool and champions Manchester City.
Sarri admitted he was frustrated with the way Chelsea took their foot off the gas after the opening goal.
"We started well for 10 minutes but after the goal we thought 'now it is easy', but it wasn't," Sarri said.
"We slept for 25 minutes and then we were in trouble. We were better in the second half but we need to improve the mental reaction.
"It is very difficult to understand. We stopped playing and then we had problems."
Â
Sarri also revealed he has told Chelsea's hierarchy he needs a new midfielder to replace Cesc Fabregas, who joined Monaco on Friday.
"Jorginho was in trouble and on the bench there wasn't a player for that position. I need an option for that position," he sad.
"The club knows very well my opinion. It depends on the club decision. I cannot do anything more."
Another winter of discontent is brewing for Newcastle, wo have won only once in their last nine league games.
The Magpies' 18 points is their lowest tally after 22 matches of a top-flight season since they were relegated in 1988-89.
"We have to be better than three teams and if we play like today we can do it," Benitez said of Newcastle's relegation battle.
Tuesday's 1-0 defeat against Tottenham in the League Cup semi-final first leg was the latest display of attacking impotence from misfiring Chelsea, who had failed to score in their last two home league games.
But it took only nine minutes for the Blues to go in front as Newcastle's five-man defence was carved open with ease.
A fine long pass from Chelsea defender David Luiz caught Clark flat-footed.
Pedro timed his run behind Clark perfectly and held off the centre-back's weak attempt to recover as he lofted a delicate chip over Newcastle keeper Martin Dubravka for his seventh goal of the season.
Chelsea dominated possession in the first half-hour, but they switched off at the back as Newcastle almost snatched an equaliser.
Salomon Rondon flicked a header towards Ayoze Perez and he accelerated away from Antonio Rudiger, only to shoot woefully wide with just Kepa Arrizabalaga to beat.
It was a warning that Sarri's men failed to heed and in the 40th minute Newcastle were level.
Matt Ritchie curled over an out-swinging corner and Clark muscled past Luiz to power a superb header past Kepa from 12 yards.
Once again, Sarri stubbornly stuck to his experiment with Eden Hazard as Chelsea's central striker despite the Belgian star's dislike of the tactic.
Hazard has now scored just four times in his last 17 games, suggesting he is much more effective in his natural role on the flanks.
With frustration mounting, a misplaced pass by Jorginho triggered angry moans from Chelsea fans, who booed the team off at half-time.
The atmosphere was on the verge of turning even more toxic until Willian came to the rescue in the 57th minute.
Teed up by Hazard at last making an incisive burst, Willian cut back inside two Newcastle defenders on the left side of the area before curling a masterful finish into the far corner.

Belief can take United all the way: Solskjaer
Belief can take United all the way: Solskjaer
PARIS • This was the Manchester United of old, the United of Alex Ferguson, fighting till the final whistle and never giving up.
This was the United of their glory days, playing with steel, with youth, and winning in Fergie time.
Never before had a 2-0 home first-leg deficit been overturned in the Champions League, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men "always believed".
Against all odds, against all possession counts - Paris Saint-Germain had 82 per cent of the ball - United had dared to dream and, despite all their absences, had too much heart for the French champions on Wednesday night.
Romelu Lukaku twice capitalised on critical errors by PSG's backline before "fearless" Marcus Rashford converted his added-time penalty, his first for the club, as the Red Devils triumphed on away goals after a 3-1 victory in the second leg of their last-16 tie.
Afterwards, the Norwegian revealed he always felt the comeback was on the cards, before admitting it was "special", saying: "Football - that's what it gives you. We set out the plan and it wasn't about the ball.
"The plan was to get the first goal, be in the game with five or 10 minutes to go, and we were. The dressing room was unbelievable, just to see the club together with the owners, ex-managers, ex-players."
While United were fortunate at times, with Thomas Meunier and Juan Bernat - who got PSG's goal on the night - both striking the woodwork, the rash of injuries and Paul Pogba's suspension meant that Solskjaer's "fresh team" had "loads of energy" to soak up the pressure at the Parc des Princes.
He added: "It's this club. It's what we do, that's Man United, that's the Champions League. It's a typical Manchester United night. We had a game plan and the belief in the boys was what we hoped for.
"Everyone shares a huge pride. The players were focused, they listened to all the instructions and they knew that we had to defend well. There was a lot of quality."
And, having made the quarter-finals for the first time since 2014, Solskjaer sees no reason why United cannot "go all the way" and claim their fourth European Cup after a record-extending nine consecutive away wins.
The caretaker manager said: "Of course we fancy ourselves, but we just have to wait for the draw (next Friday) and then take the game as it comes."
After Rashford's winner, which sparked scenes of delirium among the away fans, including Ferguson, Pogba and former United greats Patrice Evra and Eric Cantona, as well as on social media, United's players renewed calls for Solskjaer to be given the job full time.
Lukaku posed a question to reporters, asking, "What else does he have to do?", while Luke Shaw said: "I don't think I need to say much after all these results, it looks certain. We all love Ole and we love the job he's done so far... We've got so much more to look forward to."
Fellow full-back Ashley Young agreed, saying: "If you look from the outside, you'd say, 'Why not?'. He's been fantastic since he's come in, a breath of fresh air."
While United marched on, PSG were left to rue another Groundhog Day exit in Europe, with the club again failing to progress beyond the last eight since the Qatari takeover in 2011 despite the hundreds of millions spent in a bid to win their maiden European Cup.
However, club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi was adamant there would be no knee-jerk reaction to fire manager Thomas Tuchel.
Insisting the club would "make decisions with a cool head", he told French daily L'Equipe: "I trust the coach... it's not because we lose a match that we have to act now... this is not the moment."
Neymar was in no mood to offer a measured perspective of the defeat. Lashing out at the video assistant referee system on Instagram after Rashford's spot kick, the Brazil forward, who was injured for both legs, called the decision a "disgrace".
In the other tie, Porto's 3-1 home win over Roma sent them through to the next round 4-3 on aggregate.

Europa League hat-trick hero Giroud hoping for EPL chance
LONDON • Olivier Giroud has not given up hope of regaining a place in Chelsea's Premier League team, with his prolific form in European competition as he seeks to extend his stay for a further year.
The Frenchman's hat-trick in last Thursday's 5-0 thrashing of Dynamo Kiev in Ukraine established him as the leading scorer in this season's Europa League, with nine goals in as many games.
Yet the striker, an £18 million (S$31.9 million) signing from Arsenal in January last year, has played only 56 minutes of top-flight football this year.
Giroud signed an 18-month contract but there is an option for Chelsea to extend his stay by a year.
Asked whether he would accept life as a substitute at the Blues, he said: "No chance. I'm a competitor and I want to play every single game and to be happy on the pitch.
"I am not picking the team, the manager makes the choices. I play in the Europa League and I am happy to help the team. The Premier League is another thing. I'm 32 but I'm still young. I feel very well physically."
Giroud, who has made only 12 Premier League starts and scored four league goals since arriving at Stamford Bridge, must now displace Gonzalo Higuain, who joined in January on a loan deal.
The 31-year-old Argentinian missed the trip to Ukraine owing to illness but should be in contention for the Premier League match at Everton's Goodison Park today.
Two goals on his third start for the club in the 5-0 win over Huddersfield suggested Higuain would not take long to find his feet.
His form since then, however, has been underwhelming. A return of just one more goal, in the win at Fulham, would be much more acceptable if the forward's all-round play was helping to bring out the best in other players around him.
There has been limited evidence of that, and there is certainly a case to be made that Giroud provides a focal point up front.
The problem for Maurizio Sarri is that the fight for a top-four finish - Chelsea have 57 points, three behind fourth-placed Arsenal - means he has little margin for error and it remains to be seen if Giroud is rewarded with a start today.

Football: China saved by goalie howler in narrow win over Kyrgyzstan in Asian Cup opener
AL-AIN, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES (AFP) - A spectacular goalkeeping blunder helped Marcello Lippi's China avoid a humiliating defeat as they came from behind to narrowly beat minnows Kyrgyzstan 2-1 at the Asian Cup on Monday (Jan 7).
The Central Asians, ranked 91st in the world and playing their first major tournament, bossed the first half and deservedly led 1-0 at the break of their Group C clash after Akhlidin Israilov's rasping strike.
But panicky Kyrgyz goalkeeper Pavel Matiash committed the howler of the Asian Cup so far, when he palmed the ball into his own net shortly after half-time, before Beijing Guoan forward Yu Dabao grabbed the winner 12 minutes before the end.
It spared China's blushes against a team of players who ply their trade in leagues as diverse as Bangladesh and the Turkish amateur ranks, while both Matiash and Israilov are clubless.
Lippi, who is expected to depart his post at the end of the Asian Cup, said he was "enormously unhappy" at China's first half, but proud of their revival.
"During the first half we weren't playing well, and I thought if we keep playing like that we're going to lose the match," said the 2006 World Cup-winning coach with Italy.
"After the reaction from my players in the second half, I'm happy that we won the three points."
Kyrgyzstan coach Alexandr Krestinin refused to blame his goalkeeper and said his team would keep fighting, with games against South Korea and the Philippines to come.
"We're not talking about the mistake from one person - it was the whole team that lost the game," he said. "We missed chances in the first half, but this is how the game is at big tournaments and we know that." .
Kyrgyzstan were far from overawed by their Asian Cup debut as they attacked from the outset at Al Ain's sun-drenched Khalifa Bin Zayed Stadium.
In an open first half, China's Wu Lei had the first shot in anger but Vitaly Lux should have scored for Kyrgyzstan on 26 minutes when he fired well over after a brilliant touch from Mirlan Murzaev.
Wu Xi, set up by Wu Lei, flashed one wide three minutes later but Kyrgyzstan were causing serious problems at the other end, with 14 players packing the six-yard box for one corner.
Lux could not get on the end of Bekzhan Sagynbaev's enticing header across the face of goal but it was not long before Kyrgyzstan's imaginative build-up play created the breakthrough.
Three minutes before half-time, Murzaev's header fell perfectly for Israilov just outside the box and the out-of-contract midfielder smashed his shot in off the right post.
Moments later, Lux had a gilt-edged opportunity to make it 2-0 but he poked his shot just wide when one-on-one with China goalkeeper Yan Junling.
China came out with renewed purpose after the break and they benefited from an outrageous piece of luck when Matiash handled into his own net on 50 minutes.
Matiash attempted to palm Bernhardt Edgar's defensive header from a corner over the bar but only succeeded in batting it over the line.
It took the wind out of the White Falcons' sails and as they tired, Wu Xi and Wu Lei both came close with headers - while Matiash nearly gifted them a second goal when he fumbled a back pass.
A Chinese winner looked inevitable and it was Yu who completed the turnaround, rounding Matiash and scoring from a tight angle on 78 minutes.

He had planned to play it cool after scoring for the first time in the Singapore Premier League (SPL) last weekend, but the teenager inside striker Vasileios Zikos Chua could not contain himself.
He wheeled away from goal at full speed, arms outstretched, and screamed at the top of his lungs, in an expression of joy not dissimilar to the Italian Marco Tardelli's iconic 1982 World Cup celebration.
Vasileios, who turned 17 the day after scoring in Geylang International's 1-0 win over Young Lions, became the third-youngest scorer in Singapore's 24-year-old professional football league, and its youngest match-winner.
Hariss Harun, at 16 years and 174 days, tops the list with his 2007 strike for the Young Lions against Singapore Armed Forces FC, followed by Fareez Farhan, who scored in 2011 also for the Young Lions against Warriors FC when he was 16 years and 331 days.
"I had a few things in mind (for the celebration), and I'll usually just jump and pump my fist in the air. But, after I scored, I just lost control of the situation," Vasileios sheepishly told The Straits Times ahead of today's Hougang United game.
Born to a Singaporean father and a Greek mother, he grew up in Kastoria in northern Greece and moved to Singapore when he was 10.
His given name means king in Greek but is a mouthful for Singaporean tongues, so his teammates and coaches call him Bill, a shorter, direct translation.
The first-year Nanyang Junior College student admits he is still learning to juggle his professional football ambitions with his studies but adds that milestones, like his maiden strike, give him the motivation to keep going in both.
"It was an extremely special moment, and it meant a lot to me," he said. "Growing up and wanting to be a professional, it's a huge landmark to get your first goal.
"It was a dream come true.
"All I want to do now is give 100 per cent and make sure I'm not content with what I have now; I have to keep improving and working hard."
Geylang handler Noor Ali, who coached him at Tanjong Katong Secondary School for four years, said: "Bill is a smart boy. As a coach, I'm proud to see a young player who can balance his studies and football, because I think that comes only with the right attitude. But he has just turned 17 and, football-wise, he still has a long way to go."
He is hoping his team can continue their good form with a third win on the trot but noted that Hougang, who are third in the table and one spot above Geylang on goal difference, are no pushovers.
It is still early days, but both teams have come a long way from being cellar dwellers last year, and a win would propel either side into second spot for at least 24 hours.
Said Noor Ali: "We'll go out and play our normal game, but we also know Hougang have good quality and depth in their squad, and we have to keep an eye on two or three players."

Guardiola sorry City awarded 'offside' goal
LONDON • Pep Guardiola was apologetic after Manchester City were given a helping hand on their way to a 3-1 home victory over Watford, but insisted his side were deserving of the win that ensured they remained top of the Premier League table.
City were labouring to break down their opponents' massed ranks, until Raheem Sterling's controversial 46th-minute opener on Saturday changed everything.
The forward was initially flagged for offside as his effort looped over goalkeeper Ben Foster, but the decision was overturned by referee Paul Tierney following a close discussion with his assistant referee.
While Sterling was in an offside position as he latched onto Sergio Aguero's layoff, it was deemed the ball was kicked to him by Watford defender Daryl Janmaat.
His interference was enough to convince Tierney that the England international, who went on to complete his hat-trick before substitute Gerard Deulofeu scored a consolation goal, should be ruled onside. But Guardiola admitted post-game he was "sorry" the balance of the game hinged on that decision.
He also backed the introduction of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) in the league next season despite complaints over its use in the Champions League last week and felt Sterling could "have done better" despite taking his tally to 18 goals in all competitions this term.
The City manager said: "There should be an easy solution and, next season... with VAR, that will not be a problem - it will be fairer.
"At the beginning of the season, Manchester City voted to install VAR. Some clubs didn't accept it. Hopefully next season, like in other countries in Europe, we can install it. I apologise to Javi (Gracia) and to Watford if the first goal is offside, but we were incredible.
"We made an incredible game, we played well in the first-half and they had only one shot on target - their goal - against us.
"The three goals (by Sterling) were fantastic but... he didn't help us a lot defensively in the first half and he gave the ball away a lot."
His opposite number Gracia was angered by the call, which basically altered the course of the game.
"Today, in my opinion, it is clear," the Watford boss said. "At the moment Aguero touched the ball, Sterling is in an offside position, a clear offside position, maybe (by) two metres. After that, he is in an offside position and he has influence as well because he goes to the ball.
"It is true the defender touches the ball, but he touches it because Sterling is close to him and is going to press him."

Football: Rafael Bentez fumes as Wolves deny Newcastle with another stoppage-time equaliser
LONDON (THE GUARDIAN) - Rafael BenÃtez must hate it when the fourth official holds up the board for added time against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Just as Matt Doherty had headed a winner in the 94th minute at St James' Park in December, so Newcastle were again undone by a last-gasp goal as Willy Boly headed in Adama Traoré's deep cross in the 95th on Monday night.
Boly was able to head beyond a flapping Martin Dubravka in an aerial duel at the back post. But once BenÃtez had moved beyond his disappointment, the Newcastle manager should still take great heart from the resolve his side displayed as Isaac Hayden's rare goal earned United the draw that lifts them a point above the English Premier League relegation zone.
BenÃtez initially said his goalkeeper should have defended Traoré's high cross better before revealing his true feelings.
"In England they don't understand the rules," he said. "It was already the 94th minute so you can say too many things that won't change what happened, like we couldn't change in the first game. I'm obviously disappointed but very happy with the performance of the team."
Asked to clarify if he believed the referee, Graham Scott, had made a mistake, he added: "The six-yard box is there to protect the 'keeper. You have to protect the 'keeper. We have been here for years and it's still very difficult to explain that."
The concession of the late goal added insult to injury for BenÃtez, clearly still holding a grudge for the events at St James' where he believed Boly should have been dismissed for elbowing Ayoze Pérez in Wolves' penalty area.
"I think we have to be really disappointed with the way we concede in both games against this team," he added. "After an elbow in the face of my player and a penalty not given and then we concede today, you can analyse it. But I'm really disappointed to concede this way against a good team."
Certainly Wolves refuse to admit when they are beaten. They have now scored 14 goals after the 80th minute this thrilling season, six of those coming in added time.
There is a resilience that comes with belief. "Yes that we have until the last minute," Nuno EspÃrito Santo, the Wolves head coach, said.
"Till the last second the referee whistles to finish, we keep going. For that I am really pleased because it one of the things we must keep on doing, (showing) character and believing. We have had a lot of moments like this."
Wolves may have been thwarted in their bid to chalk up a fourth successive top-flight victory for the first time since 1972 but refreshed by their warm-weather training trip to Marbella, they still strengthened their hold on seventh place in the Premier League and now turn their attention to the FA Cup fifth-round tie at second-tier Bristol City.
The uneasy peace between BenÃtez and the Newcastle hierarchy could yet lead to happier times.
Not only has the manager been able to find a formula that has also brought victories over Cardiff and Manchester City, he has also been able to introduce a £21 million (S$36.7 million) attacking presence and Miguel Almirón came off the bench to applause almost as rapturous as that greeting Hayden's first goal since October 2017.
BenÃtez has made it plain that talk of his Newcastle future must wait till the summer. But at least a thaw seems to be in evidence.
Wolves, with five wins from their previous seven games, were the dominant team in the first period, with Raúl Jiménez, with eight goals from his last 11 starts, doing everything but score. The manner in which he took the long route to get past DeAndre Yedlin and Fabian Schär before unleashing a shot that Dubravka was happy to save was indicative of his soaring confidence.
Newcastle finished the half the stronger, however, Salomón Rondón running on to Pérez's clever angled pass and managing a shot that only went wide after Conor Coady's tackle.
Eleven minutes after the restart, it was a similar through ball that set up their goal. It is 16 months since Hayden last scored but when Boly was caught on his heels as Schär strode forward and played a pass down the inside-right channel, the midfielder showed no hesitation as he shot powerfully home at the near post, exposing Rui PatrÃcio's early decision to dive the other way.
Hayden would have been an unlikely hero. Having had requests to leave rejected in each of the past two transfer windows, to move south to be nearer his infant daughter, he may just have played a crucial part in Newcastle's effort to stay up.

Football: Arsenal sign Denis Suarez on loan from Barcelona
LONDON (REUTERS) - Barcelona midfielder Denis Suarez is joining Arsenal on loan to the end of the Premier League season with an option to buy, the Spanish club said on Wednesday (Jan 30).
Arsenal manager Unai Emery worked with the 25-year-old Spaniard, who has made few appearances for Barcelona this season, during a previous loan spell at Sevilla.
Barcelona said they had also extended Suarez's contract by one year and until June 30, 2021.
Arsenal are fifth in the Premier League, level on points with Chelsea who have a game in hand and two clear of Manchester United in a tight battle for a Champions League slot.
"If we can sign one player to come and help us that is good for us," Emery said after a 2-1 win victory over Cardiff on Tuesday.
"We need wingers."
Suarez has some prior experience of English football as he spent two seasons at Manchester City as a teenager, although his competitive appearances were fleeting.
