Depay repays Koeman's faith

ROTTERDAM • Memphis Depay might be battling for both game time and goals at club level, but his headline performance for his country at the start of the Euro 2022 qualifiers on Thursday has won him the full backing of Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman.
"A wonderful player. You saw what he is capable of, even if he is playing less at his club," the Dutch coach said, after the Lyon striker scored twice and made the other two goals in a comfortable 4-0 Group C win over Belarus.
"Memphis is very important pillar for us and he showed that," added Koeman, making clear the 25-year-old would be a starter when the Dutch host Germany in their next qualifier tomorrow.
"The ideal is to have a settled starting line-up to be able to work with. You see that with (world champions) France, how infrequently they change their team."
For Depay, the night could have gone a little better even after setting up Liverpool duo Georginio Wijnaldum and Virgil van Dijk for the other two goals.
"If you score twice, you always want a third," he said of missing out on a hat-trick in Rotterdam.

  • 12

  • Goals the Netherlands have scored in their last five games.

"But I'll save that for later," he added, with a wink to Dutch television station NOS.
Depay scored in the first minute as the visitors made an early defensive error to get the Dutch campaign off to a perfect start.
The Netherlands had missed out on the last European Championship in France and also last year's World Cup in Russia and are rebuilding under Koeman.
"It was a great start and, if you begin like that, it makes the rest of the evening easier," Depay added.
"We said that to each other before we went out that we wanted to push hard for a goal in the opening 10 minutes.
"But you've also got to have a little luck."
Depay has scored six Ligue 1 goals this season in comparison to 19 in the last campaign as his form has dipped in the French league.
He has also not played in the last two league matches.
"I don't think I need to say anything about that now," he said, when asked about his situation at his club.
"Here I am enjoying being home with my teammates and getting the confidence of the coach. We have a good squad and a good coaching staff.
"We've got to ensure we stick together as a team and that everyone buys into our ambitions."
Koeman's exciting young side are now top of Group C and level on three points with Northern Ireland, ahead of tomorrow's clash with Germany - whom they knocked out of the Nations League the last time they met in November.
The Dutch have been a revelation since Koeman took charge in the wake of their failure to qualify for the World Cup.
They beat both Germany and world champions France to win their Nations League group and set up a semi-final clash with England in June.

Football: Neymar heads to Qatar for medical assessment

PARIS (AFP) - Neymar will travel to Qatar to undergo a "complete assessment" six weeks into his recovery from a fractured right foot, the club said on Thursday (March 8).
The Brazil forward watched on forlornly from the stands at the Parc des Princes as PSG crashed out of the Champions League last 16 on Wednesday to Manchester United on away goals following a 3-1 defeat.
"Neymar Jr will travel to Aspetar (sports clinic) in Qatar for the next 3 days as scheduled in the initial recovery plan," the club wrote on its Twitter account.
"He will undertake a complete assessment after six weeks of his injury. He will be accompanied by a medical team from PSG."
The 27-year-old damaged the fifth metatarsal in his right foot in a French Cup win over Strasbourg on January 23 and was ruled out for 10 weeks.
PSG were hoping he would be healed enough to get back on the pitch in time for a potential Champions League quarter-final in April, but the French side suffered a humiliating exit as United sensationally overturned a 2-0 first-leg deficit.

Emery Gunning for signings

Emery Gunning for signings

LONDON • Unai Emery was pleased with the "progress and passion" of his young attackers after Arsenal's 3-0 FA Cup third-round victory against Blackpool on Saturday, but he also made no secret of his intention to bring in reinforcements during January's transfer window.
The Gunners cruised to victory with teenager Joe Willock scoring twice - becoming the youngest Arsenal player to score in an FA Cup tie since Aaron Ramsey in 2010 - before Alex Iwobi added gloss to the scoreline.
"I think the club is working on the possibility to take some players who can help us during these next four months," said Emery.
"Maybe the transfer market can help us with a centre back, but it is not easy because also (Konstantinos) Mavropanos is coming back after injury. Also a winger, right or left, one player can help us in this position."
Arsenal are reportedly in negotiations with Barcelona over the signing of 24-year-old midfielder Denis Suarez who played for Emery at Sevilla during the 2014-15 season.
Suarez, who spent two years at Manchester City as an academy player between 2011 and 2013, has played 46 league matches for Barcelona in 21/2 seasons but has never been able to hold down a regular starting place.

Maybe the transfer market can help us with a centre back, but it is not easy because also (Konstantinos) Mavropanos is coming back after injury. Also a winger, right or left, one player can help us in this position.
UNAI EMERY, Arsenal manager, is clear which positions he wants to reinforce.

The Spaniard, who has one international cap, won in 2016, is under contract with Barcelona until 2020 and would cost around £20 million (S$34.6 million).
Asked whether he saw Suarez as a winger, Emery added: "He was playing in his career, and with me also, as a right or left winger."
Emery retained only four players in the starting line-up from the 4-1 Premier League victory over Fulham on New Year's Day, and it was the young attackers who shone, with Willock ably supported by fellow 19-year-olds Eddie Nketiah and Ainsley Maitland-Niles.
Emery said: "We need players with commitment. We need players who are prepared when the team needs them and can step up. We mixed experienced players in the squad with some young players like Joe, Eddie and Ainsley.
"It was a good combination. They showed us they are progressing with the team and, mostly importantly, they showed their passion."
Willock's day could have been even better but a linesman's flag ruled out a hat-trick goal.
"The linesman crushed my dreams with the hat-trick, but that's football and, hopefully, I can get another opportunity soon. Hopefully, the boss keeps believing in me," said the midfielder.
Arsenal's team bus was briefly delayed on their way to the match after a Blackpool fan climbed onto its roof in protest at the Lancashire seaside club's owners.
The fan was photographed sitting on top of the coach at Arsenal's team hotel shortly before the London side were to depart for the match at Bloomfield Road.
Supporters of third-tier Blackpool have regularly protested against club owner Owen Oyston and many are boycotting home games with gates averaging only 4,129 at their 17,000-seater ground which hosted Premier League football in 2010-11.
The man was eventually arrested and the Arsenal team arrived in good time for kick-off.
Asked if the incident had affected their preparations, Emery said: "There was no change for us. We prepared as usual and I am proud of our work today.
"We had big commitment, good concentration, we were competitive and we imposed our quality little by little."

Rodgers closing in on EPL return with Leicester

LONDON • Brendan Rodgers will soon make his return to managing in the Premier League, as Celtic "very reluctantly" granted him permission to talk to Leicester City.
The 46-year-old Northern Irishman, who has not coached a Premier League team since being sacked by Liverpool in October 2015, is in talks about filling the vacancy left by Claude Puel, who was sacked last Sunday.
Rodgers, who came agonisingly close to landing an elusive Premier League title for Liverpool in the 2013-14 season, has rebuilt his reputation in Scotland, guiding Celtic to a historic double treble in two seasons and are on course for a third one this term.
However, not even the lure of that - and getting the better of Rangers manager Steven Gerrard who played under him at Liverpool - has been enough to deter him from meeting the Leicester hierarchy.
"Celtic Football Club today confirmed that it has been approached by Leicester City to speak to Brendan Rodgers with regard to their current managerial vacancy," read a Celtic statement.
"Brendan has indicated to the club that this is an opportunity he wishes to investigate further and therefore, very reluctantly, the club has granted him permission to speak to Leicester."
Prior to Liverpool, Rodgers was in charge at Swansea, where he introduced a brand of possession-based play inspired by his interest in Spanish football.
Since arriving at Parkhead in 2016, Rodgers has won two league titles, three Scottish League Cups and two Scottish Cups.

Celtic are currently eight points clear of local rivals Rangers in the Scottish Premiership as they chase an eighth consecutive top-division title.
Puel was dismissed after 16 months in charge following Saturday's 4-1 defeat by Crystal Palace.
The 57-year-old Frenchman left the club 12th in the Premier League, having lost five of their past six league games and just eight points above the relegation zone.
First-team coaches Mike Stowell and Adam Sadler were put in temporary charge for their league match at home to Brighton yesterday.

Football: Spain make it three wins out of three with Euro 2020 victory over Faroes

TORSHAVN, Faroe Islands (REUTERS) - Spain eased to their third win from three games in their Euro 2020 qualification campaign by beating the Faroe Islands 4-1 away on Friday (June 7) to stay two points clear at the top of Group F.
Captain Sergio Ramos put the visitors ahead from a corner in the sixth minute and Jesus Navas slammed the ball into the far corner in the 19th for Spain, who were still without coach Luis Enrique, who is on extended leave for personal reasons.
The unfancied Faroes struck back on the half-hour mark though when Klaemint Olsen rose to flick a header from defender Odmar Faero into the net on the volley, although Spain restored their two-goal advantage four minutes later.
Midfielder Isco fired a shot against the post which bounced off goalkeeper Teitur Gestsson and trickled into the net to be given as an own goal, while Spain left back Jose Gaya scored the best goal of the game in the 71st minute with a classy chip.
Spain top the group with nine points from three games while Sweden are second with seven after a straightforward 3-0 win at home to Malta.
Romania are third on four points after snatching a 2-2 draw at Norway after trailing by two goals.
Striker Robin Quaison put Sweden ahead against Malta in the second minute by following up on the rebound and Viktor Claesson increased their lead early in the second half with a lofted finish, set-up by a classy backflicked pass from Marcus Berg.
Teenage forward Alexander Isak added the third goal late on after coming on as a substitute.
Norway had salvaged a point in an epic 3-3 draw in their last outing against Sweden with a last-gasp goal but they were the victims of a stoppage-time equaliser against Romania.
Tarik Elyounoussi gave the hosts the lead in the 56th minute and former Real Madrid midfielder Martin Odegaard looked to have sealed Norway's first victory of the campaign when he struck in the 70th.
Yet visiting striker Claudiu Keseru had other ideas, pulling a goal back in the 77th minute with a header from close range before completing the comeback in stoppage time with another strike.

Speed is key for Socceroos

Speed is key for Socceroos

SYDNEY • Australia are banking on pace and versatility up front to win back-to-back Asian Cups as they embark on a new era without stalwarts Tim Cahill and Mile Jedinak.
The Socceroos are a different beast to Ange Postecoglou's team that beat South Korea in extra time to lift the trophy at home in 2015.
They have a new coach in Graham Arnold and an inexperienced squad, with the majority of the 23 men in the United Arab Emirates never having experienced the cut and thrust of Asian Cup football.
Since taking the reins after a poor showing at their fourth consecutive World Cup in Russia under Bert van Marwijk, Arnold has asserted his authority with the team unbeaten in his first four games.
The 55-year-old has jettisoned several players and changed the style of play. For years, Australia used to have one target man up front, usually Cahill, but the traditional centre forward role has been replaced with an attacking trio.
"The need for speed is up front," Arnold declared, naming a host of players who can "make a difference" in such a role - Matt Leckie, Jamie Maclaren, Andrew Nabbout, Chris Ikonomidis, Awer Mabil, Robbie Kruse and Tom Rogic.
"They're technically very good but quick. People talk about the goalscoring side of it. We've got goalscorers everywhere."
Arnold is keeping Jordan, their first opponents in Group B tomorrow, guessing who will lead the line.
MacLaren and Leckie would seem to be the front runners. He was also banking on Martin Boyle, but the Hibernian winger was ruled out of the tournament after picking up a knee injury in their 5-0 rout of Oman in a warm-up game on Sunday.
It is a blow for Australia with Boyle having already scored two goals in three appearances for a country he had never even visited until Arnold travelled to Edinburgh to convince him to switch allegiances in recent months. He will be replaced by the Cyprus-based striker Apostolos Giannou, 28.
Australia are already without midfielders Daniel Arzani and Aaron Mooy owing to knee injuries, but Arnold can still count on a mix of old and new.

  • AUSTRALIA FACTFILE

  • FIFA RANKING: 41
    BEST PERFORMANCE: Champions (2015)
COACH: Graham Arnold KEY PLAYER: Tom Rogic (midfielder)

Mark Milligan, Kruse and Leckie have plenty of experience, while there are youthful additions such as Ikonomidis and Mabil, a refugee who came from Sudan in 2006 and made his debut in October.
Arnold also expects Rogic to be among the best players at the Cup as the attacking midfielder continues to recover from a knee injury.
"I expect him to be nearly player of the series," said Arnold. "There's not many talents that have come through Australia with that type of technique and skill as Tommy.
"When you give him freedom and confidence and belief, get him smiling and make him happy, he's going to be great."
Only South Korea, Japan and Saudi Arabia have managed back-to-back triumphs. Australia first need to get through a group that also includes Syria and Palestine.
Former goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer identified South Korea and Japan as the Socceroos' biggest title threats, and said anything less than making the semi-finals would be a failure.
"We've qualified for four consecutive World Cups, and are Asian Cup champions so there's a very high bar in the national team," he said.
"It's about attitude and character and we go into this tournament with that intact.
"We have seven games and I expect (them) to win every game."

BOURNEMOUTH, England (REUTERS) - Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino remained defiant despite his side preparing for their Champions League semi-final second leg against Ajax Amsterdam in disjointed fashion as they had two men sent off in a 1-0 defeat by Bournemouth.
Already trailing 1-0 in the tie ahead of the clash at the Amsterdam Arena on Wednesday, Tottenham looked to claim the three points on Saturday (May 4) that would have made sure of another season of Champions League football in 2019-20.
However, Nathan Ake's stoppage-time header inflicted a 13th league defeat of the season on Spurs who had been reduced to nine men shortly after halftime.
The north London side have won just five of their last 15 in all competitions, and have lost their last three in a row. Ake's late winner also means Tottenham have lost six consecutive away Premier League matches for the first time since May 2004.
They had their chances in the first half at the Vitality Stadium, but found debutant goalkeeper Mark Travers in inspired form.
Even after Son Heung-min and Juan Foyth had been sent off, Spurs looked comfortable in holding out for a crucial point, until poor marking allowed Ake in at the last.
Pochettino remained positive, though, believing his side are still enjoying a fine season.

"We are third, we are competing for the top four and in the semi-finals of the Champions League," the Argentine said.
"If you look back at first game of the season, to be in position we are in today, we'd be happy.
"The first 40 minutes we played well and created chances but didn't score. Then we know football can be cruel, they scored in the last minute. We need to move on.
"It (another defeat) won't affect that (Ajax match) - we need to be ready for Wednesday."
Spurs travel to Amsterdam having won just once away from home in the Champions League this season.
They will need to come up with an inspired performance against an Ajax side who have won 13 of their last 15 in all competitions, and disposed of Real Madrid and Juventus en route to the semi-finals.

Football: Former Man United player Wes Brown believes top four still within Red Devils' reach

SINGAPORE - Alarm bells might have rung at Old Trafford after Manchester United's 2-0 loss to cross-town rivals City on Wednesday (April 24), with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer supposedly summoned to a crisis meeting with executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward.
But former United player Wes Brown saw a glimmer of hope in the loss, one that could spark a reversal of fortunes that will - with a bit of luck - propel the Red Devils to a top-four finish this season.
"City have been the best team in the league over the last two years and they could not ease up on any games as well, and I felt we did well in the first half," said the 39-year-old former defender.
"We kept the ball well, pressed a bit... then City came out in the second half and scored two goals; I am sure David (de Gea) will be disappointed, especially with the second goal, but mistakes do happen."
United are currently in sixth place on 64 points, two behind Arsenal and three behind Chelsea, and with an inferior goal difference to both sides. There are three games to go this season, with the Red Devils facing the Blues in a must-win game on Sunday.
"The fourth spot is still alive, I reckon," added Brown, who will be watching the game with local United fans at the Clarke Quay Fountain Square at the Football Moments event, presented by Chang Beer and organised by Singtel Media.
"We have to win all our games from now and hope there's a fall somewhere else. It's all about creating our own chances, and getting a bit of luck on our side."

Like United, Chelsea and Arsenal have blown hot and cold at the business end of the season.
Chelsea have won just three of their last seven Premier League games, dropping points at home to the likes of Wolves and Burnley, while Arsenal have lost three of their last four league games.
United themselves have lost four of their last six league games, a dip in form which coincided with Solskjaer being made permanent manager on March 28. Before that, the Red Devils were unbeaten in 11 games in all competitions after the Norweigian was appointed interim manager following Jose Mourinho's sacking last December.
When asked what he felt had gone wrong, Brown, who played alongside Solskjaer in United's legendary treble-winning side of 1999, said: "I wish I could tell you!
"There's obviously been a drop in confidence from somewhere, but I know from my playing days that when that happens, you just have to work harder as a team and pull it out from somewhere."
The former England international added that, regardless of whether or not United qualify for next season's Champions League, having the right players at the club next season will be crucial.
There has been speculation over the futures of goalkeeper De Gea, record signing Paul Pogba and misfiring striker Romelu Lukaku in recent weeks, to name a few.
Said Brown: "It's not like you can get rid of seven or eight players and bring in the same number of top quality players in one summer. It'll take a period of time.
"But I'm sure Ole has got players in mind he wants to sign, and I'm sure he wants them in early. He knows what he needs.
"For example, after (the 4-0 loss at) Everton he talked about wanting more running, wanting people to be fitter.
"Ole's watching and seeing everyday in training, and he understands who has been giving it their all and who hasn't."
