Salah's out but Reds not giving up

Salah's out but Reds not giving up

LONDON • The talk after last week's 3-0 Champions League humbling by Barcelona is that should Liverpool manage to claw back the deficit today, it would rival 2005's "Miracle of Istanbul".
However, after Jurgen Klopp revealed that top scorer Mohamed Salah will miss the second leg of their semi-final tie, it would "be the greatest comeback of them all, no question" if the Reds reach their second straight final.
The Liverpool boss dropped the bombshell at his pre-match press conference yesterday, confirming the Egypt forward, who has 26 goals in all competitions this season, had failed to recover from his head knock suffered in their 3-2 Premier League victory at Newcastle on Saturday.
Klopp said: "It's a concussion so that means he would not even be allowed to play. So that's it.
"He feels okay, but it is not good enough from a medical point of view, that is all. He's desperate (to play) everything, but we cannot do it."
The loss of another member of his "Fab Three" - Brazil forward Roberto Firmino, who has 16 goals for the term and was ruled out earlier - represents a hammer blow to Liverpool's hopes of a second consecutive European Cup final.
However, while Klopp admitted "it doesn't make life easier", he will not be waving the white flag and field a weakened side, with his team in contention to end a 29-year English league title drought ahead of the final round of Premier League matches this Sunday.

MOUNTAIN TO CLIMB
Two of the world's best strikers are not available tomorrow night and we have to score four goals against Barca to go through after 90 minutes. But, as long as we have 11 players on the pitch, we will try it.
'' JURGEN KLOPP, on the task at hand.

REDS NEED FAST START
Ideally, you score in the opening 15 minutes and put real doubt in the minds of the Barcelona players. If that happens, then I wouldn't rule anything out.
'' KENNY DALGLISH, former European Cup winner with Liverpool, identifying a glimmer of hope.

The German said: "Two of the world's best strikers are not available tomorrow night and we have to score four goals against Barca to go through after 90 minutes.
"But, as long as we have 11 players on the pitch, we will try it."
Liverpool have a rich history of stunning comebacks in European football, most famously lifting the Champions League trophy in 2005 after trailing 3-0 to AC Milan at half-time of the final.
But the 51-year-old is fully aware of the difficulty of not just scoring at least three against the Spanish champions - only two teams in the competition's history, Roma last year and Deportivo La Coruna in 2004, have overhauled a three-goal advantage after the first leg.
Liverpool must also prevent players like Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez from scoring as that would leave them needing at least five goals to progress.
Klopp added: "I imagine the place will be rocking even before we score to be honest, but we not only have to score, we also have to deny Barcelona from scoring.
"It doesn't happen too often that Barcelona don't score at all. We know how big the challenge is. This team are so wonderful we will try 100 per cent, but that doesn't mean it will all work out."
However, with Wolves visiting this Sunday, Klopp did concede "we have to make a lot of decisions".
He said: "Tomorrow night will be the third game in six days and Barcelona changed 11 positions on Saturday, so that is a massive difference as well of course.

"Together with our supporters, it was a long season and there is at least a little chance to make it even longer.
"But, if not, these are the last two home games of an incredible season and we should celebrate that with a good performance on the pitch and a very, very good performance in the stands."
Reds great Kenny Dalglish believes Klopp's men can pull off the unthinkable as "the backing from the home support will drive the players on".
Highlighting "the key to it all is getting the first goal", the former Liverpool manager told Scottish daily The Sunday Post: "Of course, it's hard to see any team scoring four against Barca to get through.
"But I do think the tie is still open, and there remains a glimmer of hope. It would be foolish to say the tie is over.
"Ideally, you score in the opening 15 minutes and put real doubt in the minds of the Barcelona players. If that happens, then I wouldn't rule anything out."

Football: Villarreal fire Luis Garcia after 50 days and reappoint Calleja

MADRID (AFP) - Struggling Villarreal on Tuesday (Jan 29) fired coach Luis Garcia after just 50 days in charge and turned to Javi Calleja, the man they axed in December.
"The decision I have made is to rehire the coach we had at the beginning, called Javier Calleja, who will take over the squad from tomorrow for the rest of the season," Villarreal president Fernando Roig told a press conference on Tuesday afternoon.
Under Calleja, the club finished fifth last season and reached the knockout rounds of the Europa League. He was sacked with Villarreal 17th in La Liga with just three victories in their first 15 league matches this season.
Luis Garcia took over on Dec 10 and won his first match three days later as Villarreal beat Spartak Moscow 2-0 at home to clinch first place in their Europa League group. But he followed that with a run of eight matches without a victory.
The Yellow Submarine have sunk to second-bottom of La Liga, drawing four and losing two of their league games under Luis Garcia. They were also eliminated by Espanyol over two legs in the Copa del Rey.
Villarreal needed "a person with knowledge of the staff and knowledge of the current situation of the club", Roig said.
He said that Calleja would give the club "the possibility of first-division football next season", adding that the returning coach must save the club without the benefit of any new signings in the January transfer window.
"It is going to be very difficult," Roig said.
Villarreal host Espanyol on Sunday and face Sporting Lisbon in the Europa League last-32 first leg on Feb 14.

LES SEALEY (MAN UNITED)

Sealey was the first goalkeeper who refused to leave the pitch during an English League Cup final. But, unlike Kepa Arrizabalaga, Sealey's actions against Sheffield Wednesday in the 1991 final was for a worthy cause.
The Englishman suffered a badly gashed knee with 12 minutes remaining and United's then physio Jim McGregor told him there was no way that he would be able to carry on playing.
At the time, there was no reserve goalkeeper on the bench which meant that one of the outfield players had to replace Sealey in goal.
Sealey refused to come off and won the argument with McGregor. He conceded no further goals, but John Sheridan's 37th-minute strike was enough for Wednesday to lift the Cup with a 1-0 victory.

LUKASZ FABIANSKI (SWANSEA)

Swansea were leading 1-0 when goalkeeper Fabianski injured himself in a collision with Tottenham striker Vincent Janssen in the 81st minute of an English Premier League match in 2017.
Then Swans manager Paul Clement told reserve custodian Kristoffer Nordfeldt to get ready, but Fabianski insisted he was fine and play resumed. When Clement decided to replace Fabianski in the 86th minute, the Pole refused.
After continued remonstrations, Clement cancelled the change, and Jon Moss - coincidentally the referee in charge of Sunday's League Cup final between Chelsea and Manchester City - waved play on.
In the end, Fabianski bizarrely conceded three goals in the final minutes as the Swans lost 3-1.

Football: Klopp, Guardiola on shortlist for Premier League Manager of the Season

Football: Klopp, Guardiola on shortlist for Premier League Manager of the Season

LONDON (AFP) - Manchester City's Pep Guardiola and Liverpool's Jurgen Klopp are on the four-man shortlist for the Premier League Manager of the Season award.
Guardiola and Klopp are locked in a battle for the Premier League title that will be settled in the final matches of the season on Sunday (May 12).
They will also slug it out for the Manager of the Season prize along with Tottenham's Mauricio Pochettino and Wolves' Nuno Espirito Santo.
Guardiola is looking to become only the third manager to retain the title in the Premier League era, with City certain to claim the trophy if they win at Brighton on Sunday.
But they have been pushed all the way by Liverpool, who have lost only once this season.
Klopp's team have amassed 94 points, the fourth-highest tally of any team in a single Premier League season, leaving them only one point behind City before Sunday's game against Wolves.
Pochettino has been recognised for keeping fourth-placed Tottenham in contention for a top-four finish despite not making a single signing for the last two transfer windows amid the disruption of a delayed move to their new stadium.
Tottenham will be guaranteed to finish in the top four if they avoid defeat against Everton on Sunday.
Nuno's Wolves, promoted last year, have collected 57 points - the most for any promoted team for 18 years.
Guaranteed seventh place, they remain in the running for a Europa League place depending on the outcome of the FA Cup final between Man City and Watford.
The final winner will be determined by a combination of a fans' vote and the views of an experts' panel.
The winner will be announced by the League Managers Association next Thursday.

Football: Former England star Paul Gascoigne faces assault trial for kissing incident

LONDON (AFP) - Former England footballer Paul Gascoigne will stand trial for sexual assault in October after allegedly kissing a woman without consent on a train, a judge ruled on Tuesday (Jan 8).
The 51-year-old ex-Tottenham and Lazio player was arrested on a train between York and Newcastle in August.
He appeared at Teesside Crown Court in Middlesbrough in north-east England to formally enter a not guilty plea, the Press Association news agency reported.
His lawyer Michelle Heeley told the court that a number of character witnesses will give evidence "about his propensity to kiss people in a non-sexual manner".
Gascoigne, who has struggled with alcoholism since he retired from top-flight football, wore a blue suit and an open-neck shirt and spoke out during the hearing.
"I'm worried to bits. I'm scared," Gascoigne told judge Simon Bourne-Arton, who granted him unconditional bail.
When told he would have to turn up for the trial, Gascoigne said: "I cannot wait. I have done nothing wrong".
The trial on one charge of "sexual assault by touching" is set to be held on Oct 14.
Gascoigne - known as "Gazza" - made his name with Newcastle before going on to play for Tottenham, Italian giants Lazio and several other teams including Rangers.

The midfielder, widely regarded as one of the most talented players of his generation, was also a key member of the England side that reached the semi-finals of the 1990 World Cup in Italy. He won 57 caps in total.
Gascoigne was one of the first big-name footballers to arrive in China when he made the shock decision to be a player-coach of second division Gansu Tianma in 2003 but he lasted just a handful of games.
In an interview published on Tottenham's website last year, he said: "Sometimes when I look back and people say to me 'do you regret anything in your career'?
"Perhaps I left Spurs too early. I loved it there. The players, the staff, everyone was class and the team spirit was phenomenal, absolute class. We had a great team."

Football: Denmark complete astonishing three-goal comeback to deny Switzerland

BASEL (REUTERS) - Denmark's Henrik Dalsgaard scored a 93rd-minute equaliser to complete an incredible comeback from three goals down to draw 3-3 away against Switzerland on Tuesday (March 26) in a pulsating Euro 2020 qualifier in Basel.
Switzerland were on the verge of making it two wins out of two at the start of their Euro 2020 qualifying campaign but Dalsgaard outjumped goalkeeper Yann Sommer to head home and earn Denmark an astonishing and unlikely point.
The home team broke the deadlock in the 19th minute when Remo Freuler beat Denmark keeper Kasper Schmeichel with a cool finish for his first international goal.
Swiss captain Granit Xhaka hammered home a 20-metre shot in the 66th minute and Breel Embolo made it 3-0 from close range after Manuel Akanji jumped highest to head across goal.
Yet Denmark came back from the dead in the dying moments of the match with goals by Mathias Jorgensen, substitute Christian Gytkjaer and Dalsgaard in less than 10 minutes.
In the other game in Group D, Ireland produced a dominant display to beat Georgia 1-0 after Conor Hourihane gave keeper Giorgi Loria no chance with a brilliant free kick in Mick McCarthy's first home game since he returned for his second spell as Ireland coach.
Ireland, who battled to a 1-0 win away to rank outsiders Gibraltar in blustery conditions in their opening match on Saturday, lead the way with six points from two games. Switzerland, who beat Georgia 2-0 in Tbilisi in their opener, are second with four points.
Switzerland visit Ireland on Sept. 5 in their next match in the group while Ireland are away to Denmark on June 7.

Klopp could miss United clash with touchline ban

Klopp could miss United clash with touchline ban
LONDON • Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp could miss the crucial Premier League clash at Manchester United on Feb 24.
The German is facing a touchline ban or a fine after being charged by the Football Association (FA) for comments he made about referee Kevin Friend after his side's league match at West Ham on Feb 4.
Klopp intimated after the 1-1 draw that Friend's second-half performance had been affected by an assistant referee's mistake for Sadio Mane's opening goal.
Mane's goal stood at the London Stadium despite James Milner being clearly offside in the build-up before Michail Antonio's equaliser cost Liverpool two points in the title race.
Klopp said after the game: "As a human being, if I know I have made a big mistake in the first half, I don't want to open the gap any more.
"Referees are obviously human beings, and I understand that, but I didn't during the game because I had no clue that our goal was offside."
The FA confirmed in a statement that Klopp had been charged for "questioning the integrity" of the match official and he has until 6pm on Monday to respond.
It said: "It is alleged that comments he made in a post-match interview following Liverpool's league game against West Ham United on Feb 4, 2019, breached Rule E3(1) as they questioned the integrity of the match referee and/or implied bias."
Liverpool are second in the Premier League behind Manchester City on goal difference, and with a game in hand.
